Abstract

Compaq Ive ^S1S 0 e antimicrobial strength offive antibiotics commonly used in a ion oot rop Research Institute clinic was investigated. The antibiotics were Gentamicin, Chloramphenicol, Ciprofloxacin, Tetracycline and Penicillin. The commercially prepared antibiotics discs were tested against pure cultures of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella sp. The result obtained showed that ciprofloxacin gave a high sensitivity against Staphylococcus aureus (41mm). Penicillin showed sensitivity against Staphylococcus aureus (33mm). Tetracycline gave high sensitivity against Escherichia coli (29mm). No organism showed resistance to Chloramphenicol, Salmonella sp was resistant to Gentamicin, Tetracycline, Penicillin and Ciprofloxacin. Pseudomonas aeruginosa was resistant to Penicillin and Ciprofloxacin and most sensitive to Gentamicin (17mm). Of all these antibiotics, Gentamicin, chloramphenicol, Tetracycline, Penicillin and Ciprofloxacin have been found to be effective in treating these bacteria and other related infections. They can therefore be used singly or in combination for better result.
