Comparative Analysis Of Gastrointestinal Helminthes Of Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus) From A Pond And River In Ikwuano Local Government Area Of Abia State, Nigeria.:- Onuekwusi, Chioma O

ABSTRACT ix A comparative study of the gastrointestinal helminth parasites of cultured and wild Clarias gariepinus in Ikwuano, Abia State, Nigeria, was investigated using the formol ether concentration method. A total of 50 Clarias gariepinus comprising 25 samples each of cultured and wild species were examined for intestinal helminthes and 10% of the specimens of the wild fish examined were infected with gastrointestinal helminth. The helminthes species recovered were 3 cestodes; polynchobothrium clarias, Wenyonia acuminata, Diphyllobothrium sp, and 2 nematode: paracamallanus cyathopharynx, procallanus laevionchus, there was no significant difference in the infection of male and female samples. It is important to note that the result shows a, high rate of gastrointestinal helminth infection in river catfish Clarias gariepinus than in pond due to the high level of treatment of the pond water
