ABSTRACT
Studies have shown that wounds in hospital settings are at high risk of methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carriage and infection. The prevalence of this bacteria and antibiotic resistant pattern in hospitals located in Umuahia, were thus studied. A total number of 30 isolates of Staphylococcus aureus were confirmed from 50 samples taken from different hospitals in Umuahia using standard isolation methods. Out of these, 15(50%) were positive for biofilm formation, 5(16.6%) showed weak biofilm while 10(33.3%) showed negative for biofilm formation. The antibiotic susceptibility pattern result showed the level of sensitivity to Erthromycin 13(65%), Amikacin 12(60%) and Gentamycin 10(66.7%) while others showed resistance such as Ciprofloxacin 6(40%) and ofloxacin 7(46.7%). The result from this study confirms that methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) continues to pose a threat to human health, especially those with wound infection.
