ABSTRACT

The antimicrobial activities of antibiotics, Aloe vera plant extract and honey was studied on bacteria isolated from wound infection. A total number of 257 bacteria were isolated. The identification of the isolates were done using standard bacteriological media and biochemical tests. Antimicrobial activity was carried out by disc diffusion method against the isolates by using Antibiotics, different concentrations of Aloe vera extract and Honey. The results of microbiological analysis revealed the isolation of Staphylococcus aureus 71 (27.6%), Streptococcus spp 49 (19.1%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa 38 (14%), Klebisella pneumoniae 33 (12.8%), Proteus mirabilis 29 (11.3%), Escherichia coli 29 (11.3%), few numbers of Streptococcus epidermis 7 (2.7%), and Providencia sp 1 (0.4%) in that order. More numbers of gram negative organisms 130 (50.6%) were isolated than gram positive 127 (49.4%). Antimicrobial susceptible pattern was studied for all the isolates, most of the gram positive isolates were sensitive to Gentamicin and Erythromycin and resistant to Streptomycin, Tetracycline, Cotrimoxazole and Cloxacillin while most of the gram negative isolates were sensitive to Gentamicin, Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin and resistant to Ceftriaxone and Cefuroxime. All the isolates were resistant to Honey at the various concentrations (Undiluted, 1:2, 1:4, 1:6) used and resistant to Aloe vera extract at 50 and lOOmg/ml concentrations however S.aureus, Streptococcus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, E.coli and P.aeruginosa were sensitive at 25 mg/ml concentration .Therefore this work suggest that Aloe vera has more inhibitory activities than honey but that Antibiotics is still a much better alternative to treatment ofwound infections.
