ABSTRACT The efficacy and safety of medicinal plants may be attributed to the vast majority of phytochemicals (secondary metabolites) inherent in them and some of these metabolites are beneficial as they help combat oxidative stress, every pathological condition known to man has a link directly or indirectly to Oxidative stress. This present study is aimed at evaluating the antioxidant effect of ethanol extracts of anthocleista djalonensis leaves in experimentally stressed rats.Antioxidants are chemical substances that donate an electron to the free radical and convert it to a harmless molecule. They are compounds that inhibit oxidation Antioxidant activity was measured by the estimation of serum concentrations of various antioxidants by standard biochemical methods. Diazepam (Img/kg) was used as a standard drug for assessment of antioxidant status. Result of serum MDA level, serum CAT level, serum SOD level, serum GSH level, serum GPx level were statistically analyzed. The serum MDA level was increased in the standard group (0.76 ± 0.25) but that was statistically not significant when compared with control (0.89 ± 0.7). Serum MDA levels were also found to be reduced in ANT (400 mg/kg) and ANT/Butanol (200 mg/kg) groups, they were also statistically significant in comparison with control group. While, in ANT (200 mg/kg) group, there was no significant increase in serum MDA level in comparison with control group. The standard increased the serum GSH level, and the difference was highly significant (P < 0.05) when compared with control group indicating potent antioxidant capacity. Oral administration of graded doses of ANT extracts also increased serum GSH levels when compared with control group. The highest increase was found in Diazepam (1 mg/kg) group and ANT/Butanol (200 mg/kg) showed very significant increase (P < 0.0.5) in comparison with control group. The serum GPx level was decreased significantly in the standard group (29.46 ± 2.59) when compared with control (39.99 ± 2.60). Serum GPx levels were also showed a significant increase in ANT (400 mg/kg) and ANT/Butanol (200 mg/kg) groups when compared with control group. While, in ANT (200 mg/kg) group, there was no significant decrease in serum GPx level in comparison with control group. The serum CAT level was found to be decreased in standard in comparison with control group. This decrease was statistically very significant (P < 0.05), ANT (200 mg/kg) and ANT (400 mg/kg) groups exhibit statistically non-significant increase in comparison with control groups. While in ANT/Diazepam (200 mg/kg) groups was statistically non-significant in comparison with control gioup. The serum leduced SOD level was found to be within same range in two extract groups in a graded manner in comparison with control group. Both standard group and ANT (400 mg/kg) showed a non-significant decrease (P < 0.05) as compared with control group. While ANT (200 mg/kg) gioup showed and ANT/Diazepam (200 mg/kg) group where statistically same. Result suggests that crude plant extract contains antioxidant properties. The medicinal plant extracts weie able to reduce the percentage damage caused by the reactive oxygen species (ROS).
