Antinutrient Properties Of Telfairia Occidentalis Pod And The Effect Of The Extract On The Serum Lipid Profile In Normal Rats And Monosodium Glutamate-Intoxicated Rats:- Okonkwo, Cynthia I

ABSTRACT 9 The anti-nutrients, trypsin inhibitor, tannin and phytate compositions in Telfairia occidentalis were determined. The antinutritional constituent such as trypsin inhibitor was found to be 4.3 (pl/mg),Tannin content was (54.9mg/l00g) and phytate content (0.74 mg/lOOg). In this study, twenty rats were used for this study and divided into five groups. The first group was monosodium glutamate the 2nd was the extract of Telfairia occidentalis pod, 3rd group given normal saline, 4th group orally received MSG+ extract (200 mg/kg body wt) and the 5th group received MSG+ extract (400 mg/kg body wt). Blood samples were obtained for assessment of serum lipids profile. In monosodium glutamate and extract treated animals LDL was significantly (p<0.05) elevated as compared to the control animals given normal saline while the HDL significantly decrease when compared to the control group with normal saline. Coadministration of extract significantly did not improve lipid profile parameters. It can be concluded that the monosodium glutamate induce effect on lipid profile parameters ofthe rats could not be ameliorated by Telfaria occidentalis pod extract.
