ABSTRACT
Bacterial susceptibility of gram negative bacteria isolated from urine samples was studied.50 Urine samples collected from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture students. Gram negative bacteria was isolated using streak method of inoculation on Cystiene Lactose Electrolyte, Deficient Agar (C.L.E.D).The isolated organisms were identified and confirmed using some morphological and biochemical tests which includes Gram stain, oxidase test, voges proskauer test, citrate test, methyl red test, sugar fermentation test, catalase test, indole test,H2S test and motility test. Isolated gram negative bacteria includes Escherichia coli, Proteus species, Kiebsiella species and Psuedomonas aeruginosa. Among the isolated organisms, Escherichia coli had the highest percentage occurrence (40%) followed by Proteus species (20%), Psuedomonas aeruginosa (12%) and Kiebsiella species(6%). Out of the 10 antimicrobial agents used, the isolates showed resistance mostly to Penicillin, Nalidixic acid, Augumentin, Cephalexin, and to septrin and were susceptible to Travid,, Streptomycin, Reflacine, Ciprofloxacin, Streptomycin. E.coli was highly sensitive to Tarivid, Ciprofloxacin and Streptomycin but resistant to Aminoglycoside and Augmentin. More so, the study has provided important information on alternatives on antimicrobial drugs to use in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
