ABSTRACT

Antimicrobial properties of Elaies guineensis bark against microbes isolated from patients with dental problem was investigated. The ethanolic and aqueous (hot and cold) extracts of the bark of E. guineensis were after extraction tested on three organisms (S. mutans, S. aureus, E. colz) isolated from dental swabs of dental problem patients alter culturing the ethanolic extract showed the highest potency against all the isolates within the range of 14.5mm17mm followed by the hot water extract within the range of 10.2mm- 14.1mm, while the cold water extract showed the least activity within the range of 8mm-1O.2mm. This study revealed that there are some bioactive compounds in the bark of E. guineensis capable of inhibiting the growth of organisms, hence can be recommended for therapeutic purpose.
