ABSTRACT X There is a current interest in the search for novel antimicrobial agents and pharmacological drugs from medicinal plants. This study evaluates therefore phytochemical content, antimicrobial activities and pharmacological effect of the leaf extract of C. dolichopetalum in the uterus of female albino rat. The antimicrobial screening was studied using a broth dilution method against four test organisms, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumonia and Pseudomonas aeruginosa shows bacteriostatic effect using agar diffusion techniques showed inhibition by the leaf extract having the highest zone of inhibition (19, 20 and 22mm) on Staphylococcus aureus. The extract gave a better minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) result (150, 100, 150 and 150mgml) and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) result (50mg/ml) respectively in the four test organisms. The study of the effect of C. dolichopetalum leaf extract in oxytocin induced contraction in non-pregnant albino rat shows a similar relaxant activity as the standard in a non-dose dependent manner with complete inhibition at 333.33pg/ml dose of leaf extract with oxytocin induced at 25.0Ip. Phytochemical analysis was done by the standard procedures, presence of alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, steriod, saponin and phenol was observed. The study has shown that the leaf of C. dolichopetalum possess antimicrobial activity and has pharmacological effect in the uterus ofrat and also that it can also be used as a substitute lor the standard since they produces same relaxant effect.
