ABSTRACT x The present study was undertaken to investigate the antifungal properties of mango seed extract and the effect of ethanol extract of Mangifera indica on the electrolyte status of normal and monosodium glutamate intoxicated rats. The antifungal activity was evaluated using the agar well diffusion method in vitro. The effect of the antifungal properties was examined against five fungal i.e A.niger, H.capsulatum, C.albicans, F.spp and P.notatum. The mango seed showed strong antifungal activity against three of the fungi (P.notation, F.spp and A.niger) used against ketoconazole,a standard antifungal drug. However, the extract displayed weak antifungal activity against H.capsulatum and C.albicans. The effect of Mangifera indica on the electrolyte status of both normal and MSG intoxicated rats were studied. Five (5) groups ofrats were fed two weeks with MSG and extract after two weeks acclimatization. Normal control (Group A) was fed with vital feed and water, negative control(Group B) was fed with only MSG diluted with water (8mg/g body weight) and vital feed, positive control (Group C) was fed with only Mangifera indica seed extract (300mg.kg) with vital feed, group D and E received MSG plus extract (200mg/kg) and MSG plus extract (400mg/kg).The result of the biochemical analysis revealed that MSG alone induces renal toxicity while Mangifera indica extract showed no toxicity on the electrolyte status, and tends to ameliorate the effects of MSG -induced toxicity when co-treated MSG with different concentration ofthe extracts.
