ABSTRACT

The antifungal activities ol Senna alula was investigated against four species of dermatophytes namely Trichophyton ruhruni, Trichophyton mentayyophyte, Trichophyton tonsurans and Microsporuin eiinis from scrapings of children with 1'inca capitis and tinea corporis using the radial growth method which showed a marked anti'jmgai effect on the dermatophytes. The Methanolic extract showed concentration dependent antifungal activity against the dermatophytes. 1 he radial h^phal growth ol Trichophyton tonsurans was the most inhibited with 6mm growth at 2mg/ml. At lOmg/ml, the radial hyphal ’ growth was reduced to 1mm, representing ‘MT, reduction in radial growth. At lOmg/ml, there was a total inhibition of radial growth of M canis. I h.c water extract showed higher anti-fungal activities again-s-t dermatophytes, causing inhibition ol radial growth of 4mm against T. luculayrophyle at 2mg/m.l and complete inhibition al 10ing/inI. The results of this study suggest that senna alula has antifungal activities against the agents ol Tinea capitis and Tinea corporis.
