ABSTRACT

Ocimum gratissium and Gongronema iatfolium are common herbs in Nigeria as medication against infections. The present study was designed to assess their effect on pathogenic bacteria; Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The herbs were first processed and then extracted using ethanol and acetone. The ethanolic and acetonic extracts were assessed for their effect on S. aureus and E. coil. At 100% concentration, all the extracts of Gongronema latfolium exhibited activity of (10-12 mm) zone of inhibition against the test organisms except S. aureus which was not inhibited by the ethanolic extract(5mm).There was no activity observed with all the extracts of O.gratissium. The results of this investigation show that Gongronema iatifoiium can be effective in treatment against infections of S. aureus and E. coil
