ABSTRACT
Many human pathogens require serious attention in developing countries like Nigeria. The antibacterial activity of leaf extract of Sica acuta were evaluated using five clinical isolate namely Escherichia co/i, Staph /ococc us atireus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi and Kiebsie//ci pneumonicl. The solvents used for the extraction of active ingredients of' the plant leaf were ethanol, methanol and water. The antibacterial effect of the leaf extract showed that the organic and aqueous solvents were resistant to Pseua'omonas ael'uginosa and Kiebsiella pneun/onia. l'he Minimum Inhibitory Concentration value of the extracts on the organism ranged between 12.5 and 25mg1ni1 for S. aureus. 50 and 25mg1m1 for S. Iijhi and 1 2.5 and 25mg1m1 for F. coli. Phytochemical screening of' the extract revealed the presence of phenol, tannins. Saponis. fiavonoids. steroids. Alkaloid and the absence of Cyanogenic glycosides. 'Ihe strong activity of the extract against known etiologic agent of diseases traditionally treated with Sida acuta leaf' provides scientific justifications for the use of the herb in ethnomedical practice in Nigeria.
