Anti-Inflammatory Activities Of Methanol Extract Of Abelmoschus Esculentus Pod (Okra):- Agbai Chinenyenwa G

ABSTRACT This study investigated the anti-inflammatory activities ofmethanolic extracts ofAbelmoschus esculentus fruits. Methods and Materials: Anti-inflammatory study was done by carrageenan induced inflammation test for anti-inflammation activities. The results obtained indicate that the methanolic pod extract (lOOOmg/kg) had significant anti-inflammatory activity in rats. The methanolic pod extract (lOOOmg/kg) of A. esculentus reduced the edema induced by carrageenan by 23.23 % on oral administration of 1000 mg/kg body wt, as compared to the untreated control group. Aspirin at 100 mg/kg body wt inhibited the edema volume by 25.25 %. Based on the result of the present study, we conclude thatlOOOmg/kg dose of pod extract exhibits significant anti-inflammatory activity. However, further studies are necessary to scrutinize underlying mechanisms of anti-inflammatory effects and to isolate the active compounds responsible for these pharmacological activities
