ABSTRACT The study investigated the acute and subacute toxicity of the methanol leaf extract of Combretum dolichopetalum in albino wistar rats. In the Acute toxicity study, the extract produced neither death nor sign of toxicity even at the highest dose of 4000 mg/kg. In the Subacute toxicity study, the extract was tested at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg given orally for 28 days. The result showed that both doses of the extract significantly increased (P<0.05) the concentrations of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotenis, and bilirubin while decreasing the concentration of high density lipoprotein in a dose dependent manner. The extract at 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg also caused non significant increase in the concentrations of triglyceride, very low density lipoproteins, Alkaline phosphatase, catalase and superoxide dismutase while decreasing the concentration of globulin. At 400 mg/kg it caused a non significant increase in the concentration of total protein, globulin, Aspartate aminotransferase, and urea. At 200 mg/kg and 400mg/kg, the histological slides when compared to the control showed evidence of significant (P<0.05) effect on hematology.
