ABSTRACT

A study of infection with geohelminths among primary school children in Umuahia North local Government Area ofAbia state was carried out. A total prevalence of infection (X2 9.275, d.f — 2, P>0.05), however school location affected the level of prevalence (X2 = 20.836, d.f = 3, P>0.05); also one of 400 primary school children aged 6-16 years were examined for the helminth infections. Helminthes identified were Ascaris lumbricoides (41.5%) Trichuris trichiura (6.7%) and hookworm (22.5%). A total of 276 subjects were infected. The age of the children had no effect on the d = 2.179, d.f = 1, P> 0.05). This study reveals that schools located near rural settlement had higher infection which influence the geohelminthiasis status entire communities. ix ! ■ ! prevalence of infection (X2 9.275, d.f — 2, P>0.05), however school location affected the level of prevalence (X2 = 20.836, d.f = 3, P>0.05); also one probably indicates that poor sanitary condition that may arise from poor sewage disposal, poor potable water, and ignorance and these factors of school children.
