ABSTRACT

The study tried to investigate he youth participation in agriculture in Umuahia North L.G.A. A random SampIe of one hundred and four youths were taken from jiour communities. Questionnaires were used, in the Cl1ection of data. The study was analyzed using simple descriptive statistics such as means, percentages, 3-d frequency tables and regression analysis. The regression analysis result showed that age and fhrming experience were the only significart variables that affect the level of youth participation in Umuahia North LG.A. Age \vfls negatively related indicating that as age increases, th level of participalion decreases. Also farming experience was positively related showing that as farming experience increases, the level cii participation increases. Yot lbs however participate more in planting, harvesting, ridging, mounding, weeding than others activities. The major cot-straint, however include farm location, hawking activities and capital. 7 r0m the result it is recommended that proper dissemination of new technologies to increase youth participation through reorganized extension deivery service should be enhanced. More so, immediate rehabilitation of education and research farm to facilitate the training of youths in agriculture. Young farmers club (YFC) should be re- introduced into primary and secondary school system in order to help youths develop sense of dignity and respect for the agricultural profession.
