ABSTRACT
The reuse of domestic
wastewater to irrigate agricultural land seems to be a practical option for
under developed world including Nigeria. The soil samples were collected
randomly at four different locations at the experimental sites for both the
sewage affected areas and non affected areas, for analyses of the
physicochemical properties of the soil. The study revealed that the effluent
effected soil were sandy Clay loam and the non effected soil were sandy loam
soils The pH of the effluent effected soil samples analyzed were statistically
same with that of the non affected soil samples at p>O.05. The average
values of moisture content obtained from the two experimental sites show that
the moisture content for the effluent effected soil was 23.1% and that of the
non effected soil was 18.4%. The results of the porosity for the effluent
effected soil were slightly lower than the non effected soil sample. The
porosity were 38.3% and 40.5% for the effluent effected soil and the non
effected soil sample respectively. Such soils moderately low permeability (as
corroborated by the hydraulic conductivity test) and therefore less difficult
to drain. The was significant different in the values of some of the chemical
properties analysed. The presence of trace elements such as zinc, Iron and lead
in high concentration relative to the non effected area poses danger to the
crops.
