ABSTRACT
The quality ofproduce gotten from the
Agricultural use ofthe soil is basically dependent on the condition of the soil
at the time of use, in a developing country like Nigeria, studying the soil and
understanding its problems and strengths is vital step that should be taken to
maximize food productivity. The study of the effect of organic amendment is a
significant topic of interest since it has to do with soil fertility and
environmental quality. The review of soil amendment showed that organic
amendment can affect the physical, biological and chemical property ofthe soil
as well as environmental quality and it is dependent on manner and frequency of
application. Application of organic amendments affects soil moisture content,
bulk density, particle density, porosity and soil nutrients, this study is a
very good practice of conserving the soil and water for sustained agricultural
production. Soil amendment is useful for improving both loamy sandy, sandy and
clay soils to make it more suitable for agricultural use as. well as make it
more environmentally suitable for other use. Aeration, drainage, rooting depth
and organic matter can all be affected by the soil amendment practice used. In
this study, soil samples were collected randomly in Umudike, Abia state,
Nigeria and cassava peels were used as an amendment materials, the result
showed that the soil acidity decreased, the soil moisture content increased and
the values ranged between 18.40% and 23.42%, it also shows an increase in other
soil chemical properties like nitrogen, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium
but a decrease in the soils phosporous. In Conclusion, the result showed that
the cassava peel significantly improved the quality ofthe soil samples and made
it more suitable for Agricultural use.
