The Effect Of Oil Type And Oil Level Of Supplementation On The Performance Of Weaner Rabbits
ABSTRACT
In order to live a healthy life, man should consume adequate
quantity and good quality animal protein. Animal protein contributes about 35g
per day out of 70g/days of protein requirement of man. (F.A.O. 1986). Plant
protein sources are deficient in some essential amino acids while protein of
animal origin has a balanced amino acid profile and thus is superior to plant
protein. However, animal protein has been in short supply in Nigeria, when
compared to its demand by consumers. This has led to continued quest for
increase in production of livestock. Rabbits which are prolific and good feed
converters also having short generation interval should be used to increase protein
supply (Cheeke 1989). High cost of feed due to high cost of some conversional
feed ingredients used in making livestock feed has hindered this quest to
increase the production of animal protein sources. Therefore there has been the
need to supplement, substitute, or completely replace some of these
conventional feeds ingredient with cheap, alternative feedstuffs in order to
reduce the cost of feeds (Ademosun, 1973).
