ABSTRACT

Malaria is a disease caused by a parasite (PlasmociiuinJicipaium) that lives part

of its tile in humans and part in mosquitoes and it remains one of the major killers

of humans worldwide, threatening the lives of more than one-third of the world's

population. This study determined the effect of malaria infection in the kidney

function of malarial patients and normal individuals. This was done by carrying out

tests on markers of kidney function which are; urea, creatinine, and electrolytes

(sodium ion, potassium ion, chloride ion and bicarbonate ion). The results obtained

from this study showed that there was no significant (P>0.05) difference in all the

tested electrolytes of the malaria infected patients when compared with that of

normal individuals. The only significant variations were found in urea and

creatinine. Urea concentration was significantly higher (41.70 ±6.11a) in the

malaria patients when compared with normal individuals (30.00±21.2 1b) while

creatinine concentration was significantly lower (0.863±0.2331)) in the malaria

patients when compared with normal individuals (1 .00±O.7O7a). The high value of

urea in malaria infection may be as a result of excess breakdown of red blood cells

or low urea clearance through the kidney. The low level of creatinine may be due

to increase in its clearance or decreased muscular activities that occur in malaria

infection.
