ABSTRACT
The primary need for this study was to determine and estimate the contributions of women to farm-family income in lkwuano local Government Area of Abia State. The specific objectives are to : identify the socio-economic characteristics of women farmers in the study are, determine the activities of women that generate income to the family, detennine the contributions of women to farm family income, determine factors that affect women's contributions to farm family income and make recommendations based on the findings. A total of 60 women farmers were randomly selected and interviewed using a well-structured questionnaire. They were selected from four autonomous communities. Data collected were analyzed using tables, percentages, frequency distribution, means and regression analysis. The results of the analysis indicated that women participated in both food crop and cash crop production, that women supplied about 57.01% of the farm labour. The level of education and type of marriage of the women fanners were significant and had positive effect on the contributions to fann family income. However, based on the findings and identified problems of this work, it is recommended that more emphasis should be laid on women education and monogamy since they can increase the women contribution. It is also recommended that the government should make processing, storage and credit facilities available in the rural area.
