ABSTRACT
The Bioactive and possible
nutrient composition of the bracket fungus Polyporus species is determined with
the view to identifying the presence of the various chemical components of the
fungus, quantify the percentage of its nutrients, vitamins and mineral elements.
It is observed that the fungus has some nutrient and bioactive substances. The
analysis of nutritional value shows that the fungus has moisture content of
(0.6%), ash content of (8.22%) and crude protein, crude lipid and crude fibre
values of (14.00%), (2.04%) and (068%) respectively. The vitamin composition is
found to be as follows, ascorbic acid (0.370mg/100g) Niacin (6.4mg/100g),
Riboflavin (0.54mg/100g) and Thiamine (0.47mg/100g). Quantitative analysis of
the bioactive constituents of the fungus shows that it contains Alkaloids
(0.03mg/100g), Flavonoids (0.60mg/100g), Phenols (0.08mg/1OOg), Saponins
(2.50mg/100g) and Tanins (0.32mg/100g). The result is discussed in relation to
the use of the fungus in medicine and other purposes.
