ABSTRACT
Arable crop production is very
important in the economics of tropical developing countries especially Nigeria
and provides the means for increased food and fiber production. Agriculture has
played a leading role in people's lives in tropical countries where at least 75
percent of the total labour force is engaged in Agriculture. Crop production is
highly-competitive and dominated by small scale producers. According to (Ezeh
and Arene, 1989) small-scaie production does not impede technological
innovation to farmers. Rather it has a positive impact on the rate of
technological innovation. Awoke (1998) observed that in West Africa — for
instance, the peasant farmers with their small farm holdings produce most of
the arable crops like cassava, yarn, cocoyam, rice, maize, sorghum, vegetables
and other foodstuffs consumed by people. A research carried out by IITA (1997)
stated that arabic crops are the commonest staples in the tropics. They are
starchy root crops and provide additional proteins and vitamins in the diet and
contribute to improved human nutrition! The arable crops are native to the
tropics and have long been contributed there by indigenous population in many
parts of the country (IlTA, 1997).
