ABSTRACT

 The study investigated the relationship between organizational structure on the performance of first bank, Nigeria limited and Fidelity Bank pic. The study specifically investigated on how first bank and fidelity banks are structured; determined the factors affecting the management of organization structure in first and fidelity banks; ascertained the perception of workers on how the design of organizational structure influences operational efficiency offirst bank and fidelity bank; examined the relationship between organizational hierarchy types and the performance offirst bank and fidelity bank pic; evaluated the extent organizational structure influences the performance of first bank and fidelity bank employees in executing their functions, determined the extent to which the structure of first and fidelity banks helps them to mobilize and retain their customers. Data for the study was gathered through primary and secondary sources. Data were obtained from 187 first bank staff and 99 fidelity bank that gave 286 respondents in the study area using a well structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics like mean scores and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (r) were used to analyze the data gathered for the study. The study found out that first bank and fidelity bank were structured in a manner that supported the actualization of their mandates, management of organization structure in first bank and fidelity banks were affected by business strategy, business environment, size of the organization, age of the organization, technology, individuals within the organization, geographical spreading of a business, customers and markets, leadership style, hierarchy of commands, economic factors, socioeconomic factors, political-administrative factors, organization products and services, and organizational instruments. The design of organizational structure in first bank and fidelity bank to a high extent influenced their operational efficiency. A positive correlation existed between banks hierarchy types like operating core, strategic apex, middle line, techno structure, support and performance of first bank Nigeria pic and fidelity bank pic. Organizational structure in first bank and fidelity bank to a high extent affected the performance of their employees positively in executing their functions. Structure of first and fidelity banks to a high extent helped them to mobilize and retain their customers. The hypotheses tested in the study were done at 5% significance level. The result showed that there was no significant difference in the mean scores of bank worker’s responses on how first bank and fidelity banks are structured; factors that affected their management of organization structure; how the design of their organizational structure influenced their operational efficiency; the extent organizational structure influenced the performance and the extent to which the structure of first and fidelity banks helped them to mobilize and retain their customers. There was a significant relationship between organizational hierarchy types and the performance of first bank Nigeria limited and fidelity Bank Pic. The study concluded that organizational structure to a great extent favourably affected the performance of first bank Nigeria limited and fidelity bank pic. The study recommends that favourable organizational structure should be the priority of the management of first bank Nigeria limited and fidelity bank pic in sustaining the performance ofthe organization in general.
