Quality Assessment And Evaluation Of Suitability Of Rainfed Water For Drinking And Irrigation Purposes In Aguluzigbo Community In Anambra State
ABSTRACT
This project is focused on quality
assessment and evaluation of suitability of rainfed water for drinking and
irrigation purpose in Aguluzigbo community in Anambra state. A rain water
harvesting set up was build using gutter storage tank (well) filtration screen
or tiny blinded net funnel P V C pipes, iron stand to lift the storage tank
from the ground. The rain water was harvested and stored in the storage tank
and the rain water sample was analyzed for Bacteriological properties. Chemical
properties and physical properties. Their result showed that the physical and
chemical parameters of the harvested rain water tested for falls within the
World Health Organization (WHO) and Food Agricultural Organization (FAO)
permissible limit except the PH value which makes the harvested rain water
acidic and not potable. The presence of chloroforms is not detected in the
harvested rain water samples. Also the presence of pathogenic
micro organizations was not detected in the tested sample. Then the result
showed that the microbial load is high though free from pathogenic
micro-organisms. The total plate count after 48 hours is greater than three
hundred (.>300). This makes the harvested rain water contaminated by free
microorganisms in the air.
