Prevalence Of Trichomonas Vaginalis Among Adults In Igwirita, Rivers State. A total of 200 adults in lgwirita community in Rivers State were examined for Trichomonas Vaginalis  infection. Direct et mount microscopy was used on urogenital specimens of vulva and urethra .Specimen was collected with a sterile swab stick and a wet smear was done using a normal saline on c clean slide, covered with a cover slip and viewed under the low power xl0 and high power x40 magnification. Out of 200 persons examined,40(20%) were infected with Trichomonas Vaginalis . lO(14.3%) male and 30 (23.0%) in female respectively. Statically analysis showed significant difference at p>0.05 in sex distribution. Adults in the age group 20-24 years had the highest prevalence of infection 15 (30%) closely followed by those of age group 15-19 years 10 (22%).the age group of 25-29 years has 4(20%) rate of infection and the least was in aoe oroun of 40-49 with 2(10%).Occurrence of infection based on occupation has 50(14%) of infected farmers rs the highest while the least was the students with 20(2%),Infection rate with the iuiarital status differs with single adults 22 (32.3%) of the infection was recorded. followed by the married adults 14(14.2%) and the least of the infection according to marital status was the widu\\ed2(11. l<). Adults with primary school education has 15 (30%) of Trichomonas vagnuelis,followed by adults with secondary school certificatel7(23%) and the least was adults with no education 2(8%). The infection was highest in adults using public water system 24(26%) than iii those that use pit toiletlO (25%) and the least private water system users 6(8%),In the occurrence of infction based on svmntomsthe female adults with greenish yellow vaginal discharge with odour has the highest with 130(7.7%) and least was those with lower abdominal pain '130(2%) while the male has 70(4%) of slight' burning after urination or ejaculation and the least was lower abdominal pain 70(1%).The factors enhancing the transmission of this trophozoite protozoan is related to poor personal hygiene. poor sanitary behaviour and poverty among high risk adults. Prostitution and keeping multiple sex partners also cause the high rate of infection. Trichómonas vaginalis infection should be prevented through public enlightenment about good personal hygiene and on sex education. Avoidance of multiple sex partners and effective chemotherapy should be advocated towards eradicating this parasitic scourge.
