Abstract
The study
investigated on perception of principals and teachers on the effect of school
resources on students' academic performance; need for counselling. Two research
questions and two hypotheses were formulated for the study. The design for the
study is a descriptive survey. The population for the study consisted of 667
teachers and 72 principals in Okigwe Education zone in Imo State. The sample
for the study consisted of 330 respondents. Comprised 300 teachers and 30
principals. The instrument for data collection was a researcher structured
questionnaire tagged Resource Provision and Academic Performance Questionnaire
(RPAPQ) having two sections. Face and content validity of the instrument was
determined by one expert in the departments of Educational Management, one in
Psychology and counselling and one expert in measurement and Evaluation all
from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. The reliability of the
instrument was established using Cronbach alpha and it yielded an index of
0.73. Data was collected directly by the researcher, the method for data
analysis includes the use of mean, standard deviation for research question and
ttest statistic for hypotheses. The results of the study reveal that teachers
and principals perceive that laboratory equipment and library facilities had
influence students' academic performance. It was recommended that counsellors
should encourage principals of school to look for avenue to internally generate
funds to restock the library with current resourceful book also teachers should
be encouraged to improvise laboratory equipment needed to introduce a lesson to
effectively carry their teaching roles amongst others. Keywords: School
