ABSTRACT
This
study examined the organizational climate as correlate of students’ academic
performance in secondary schools in Abia State, Nigeria. The study adopted a
correlation survey research design.
Sample of 480 comprising 30 principals and 450 teachers was drawn from a
population of 1856 (250 principals and 1606 teachers) respondents in the public
secondary schools in the three education zones in the state was used for the
study. The instruments for data collection were two sets of researcher develop
questionnaire titled: School Climate
Scale (SCS) and Academic Performance Proforma. The instruments were validated
by three experts, two from educational management and one from measurement and
evaluation unit of science education, all in College of Education, Michael
Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia state. They were used to
determined the internal consistency of the instruments which yielded 0.83.
Three research assistants helped in data collection. Out of the sample of 480
respondents, the return rate of 100 percent of the administered instrument was
recorded and it was used for data analysis. Person Product Moment Correlation
was used to answer the six researcher questions raised for the study and also
to test six null hypotheses that guided the study at 0.05 level of
significance. The findings showed among others that open organizational
climate, the autonomous organizational climate and the familiar organizational
climate respectively were significance to a high extent related to students’
academic performance. Based on these, we may be encouraged to establish those
organizational climate such as the open, the autonomous and the familiar
climate that enhance students academic performance.
