ABSTRACT

 This study was carried out to investigate the influence of student-teacher relationship on the career choice of secondary school students in Okigwe Education Zone 1 of Imo State. Specifically, the study seeks to; find the nature ofthe relationships between students and their teachers that can influence career choice of students in Okigwe Educational Zone I of Imo State, ascertain the extent the teacher can motivate the students on their career choice and find out the role ofteacher towards student-teacher relationship. Three research questions and three null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The study adopted a survey design. The total population was 1,978 students and 304 teachers in the 30 government owned secondary schools in Okigwe Educational Zone I of Imo State. The sampling for the study was 227 selected through proportionate stratified random sampling. The data obtained were analyzed using mean scores and simple percentage for the research questions and Chi-Square for the hypotheses. Finally, the entire question tested under the research question the nature ofrelationship between students and teacher that enhances their students’ career choice were above the accepted mean score of 2.50 and hence are accepted as a positive answer. This finding therefore shows that the nature of relationship between Students and teachers influence the career choice of the students. Secondly, all the questions under the research question: the extent teachers in student-teacher relationship motivate career choice except one were above the accepted mean score of 2.50 and hence are accepted as a positive answer. This shows that teachers in Students-Teachers Relationship to a great extent motivate the career choice of students. Lastly, all the questions under the research question: The role teachers play in student-teacher relationship that enhances career choice were above the accepted mean score of 2.50 and hence are accepted as a positive answer. This indicates that Teachers’ role in student-teacher relationship significantly influence the career choice of students. Hence, the Study concluded that the nature ofrelationship between the students and their teachers significantly influence the career choice of students in Okigwe Educational Zone 1 Imo State. Teachers significantly motivate the career choice of student in Okigwe Educational Zone 1 of Imo State. There significant influence between teacher's role and career choice of Secondary School Students in Okigwe Educational Zone of Imo State. A major educational implication ofthe findings was that the nature ofthe relationship between the students and their teachers influences their career choices. Hence, it was thus recommended that teachers should take the student-teacher relationship as their professional duties.
