ABSTRACT

Monosodium glutamate (MSG),also known as sodium glutamate is a sodium salt of the naturally occurring nonessential amino acid;found in foods such as diary products, meat and fish and in many vegetables. Monosodium glutamate is commonly marked as a food enhancer (Okon et al. ,2013).MSG is commonly used as a flavor enhancer in home as well as in food industry. Therefore, most of canned and fast food as flavored chips, canned soups, prepared meals, marinated meats, bottled soy or oriental sauces, freezing foods and tested tuna contain variable concentrations of MSG [Beyreuther et aL,2007]. In Nigeria, commercial launderers and individuals often use MSG as a bleaching agent for the removal of stains from clothes and other textile materials as this excellent bleaching property .of MSG could be harmful to tissues and organ of the • body when injected as a flavour enhancer in food (Okon et al.,2013). Antimalarial drugs treat or prevent malaria,a disease that occurs in tropical, subtropical, and some temperate regions of the world. The disease is caused by a parasite,Plasmodium, which belongs to a group of one celled organisms known as protozoa (Liwang et al.,2009). The malaria parasite developes both in humans and in the female anopheles mosquitoes. The size and genetic complexity of the parasite means that each infection presents thousands of antigens (proteins) to the human immune system. The parasite also changes through several life stages even while in the host, presenting different antigens at different stages of its life cycle (Baer et al., 2007). Antimalarialmedicine have been one of the most powerflul tools in malaria control. However, the acquisition and spread of parasitic strains that are resistant to multiple antimalarial drugs have become one of the greatest challenges to malaria treatment and are associated with the increase in morbidity and mortality in many malaria endemic countries (Liwang et al.,2009). Arthemeter-lumefantrine is one of the artemisinin-based combination therapies recommended for the treatment of malaria. The drug combination is highly efficacious against sensitive and multi-drug resistant Plasmodium falciparum (Byakika- kibwika et al., 2011). Artemisinins are considered prodrugs that are activated to generate carbon-centered free radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS). As the 0-centered radical formed upon cleavage is unable to oxidativelycycle, ROS is less likely important for the action of artemisinins. The endoperoxide bridge in the trioxane pharmacophore of artemisinins is essential for antimalarial activity, as replacement of one peroxidic oxygen with a carbon (e.g 1-carba- 1 0-deoxyartemisinin)results in a derivative devoid of antimalarial activity.
