ABSTRACT

This topic JAMB Score as a determinant of 100 — level CGPA was motivated by the fact that we have many students canying over courses in 100 — level. The aim of this study is to investigate if any, the type of relationship between JAMB Score and 100 — level CGPA and to find out the strength or degree of relationship between these two variables i.e to establish if JAMB Score can be used to predict 100 — level CGPA. Secondly, to identify the effect of admitting students based on their JAMB Scores and to identify other problems that can lead one to having a low CGPA in first year other than low JAMB Score by the use of questioners. Another aim is to give suggestions on how to alleviate the poor performance of students in Michael Okpara University of Agriculture. The data used in this study is a secondary one based on the Jamb Scores and CGPA of students in College of Biological and Physical Sciences of Michael Okpara University. The data was collected from the academic office of the University. In studying this topic, I used regression analysis using JAMB Score as the independent variable and CGPA as the dependent variable denoted as X and Y respectively. I drew a scatter diagram and determined my line of best fit and then best regression line that best describes the relationship between JAMB Score and CGPA which is Y = -3.2 + 0.027 x. I also tested the significance at 0.5% level and concluded that there is a relationship between Jamb Score and 100 — level CGPA. I also found the correlation Co-efficient between the two variables to be 0. 44 which is veiy low thereby indicating that Jamb is not a perfect determinant of 100 — level CGPA other factors are involved.
