ABSTRACT
Flight
activities of honeybees are influenced by weather conditions and bee forages
availability. This study assessed the diurnal weather influences on honeybees
flight activities at the apiary of the Department of Forestry and Environmental
Management, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike. A particular
honeybees colony was selected for this experiment because of its strength while
weather instruments such as: thermometer was used to measure the temperature;
hygrometer for the relative humidity; and heavy light metre for the sunlight
intensity. The experiment was carried out in three different days of the week
(Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) in the months of December 2021 and January
2022 in the morning at 7.30am, afternoon at 12.30pm and in the evening at
4.30pm. The number of bee foragers leaving the hive were counted and recorded
at every 30 minutes intervals. The data was subjected to path analysis, and
shown in bar chart and regression graphs. The results showed that more number of
bees flight in the morning, 7.30am and the least in the evening, 4.30pm. A
significant negative relationship occurred between number of bees flight and
temperature (°C), r2 = 64.70%; a high significant positive relationship between
number of bees flight and relative humidity (%), r2 = 72.50% and a negative
relationship between number of bee flight and sunlight intensity (lux), r2 =
26.60%. There are relationships between daily weather conditions and bees
flights. The weather conditions of a place should be considered before sitting
an apiary.
