ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to determine the extent of improvisation and utilization of instructional media for teaching senior secondary school II students' government, in Abia state. In the study, six research questions were asked and six hypotheses were tested. The literature related to the study was organized under conceptual framework, theoretical framework and empirical studies. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design, the population of the study was 565 senior secondary school II government teachers, made up of 272 male and 293 female teachers. The sample for this study was 234 senior secondary school II government teachers, which comprised of 103 male and 13 1 female teachers in government owned secondary schools in Abia state. The sample size was determined using Taro Yamane's formula for estimating sample frame. Stratified proportionate sampling technique was used to divide the sampled respondents into education zones for equity in representation. The instrument used for data collection was a 44 item structured questionnaire items which was face validated by three experts, two from Curriculum and Instruction and one from Measurement and Evaluation in the College of Education, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike. The reliability of the instrument was determined using a test re-test reliability method using 30 senior secondary school II government teachers in Imo State to measure the degree of consistency, and Pearson product moment correlation coefficient was used to determine the reliability coefficient and it yielded a reliability index of 0.87. 234 copies of the instrument were administered to SS II government teachers and 224 were retrieved, completely filled and used for data analysis representing 98% return rate. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while the hypotheses were tested using t-test statistic at 0.05% level of significance. It was revealed from the findings that 22 out 40 items were accepted by the respondents as the extent of improvisation and utilization of improvised media in teaching government in senior secondary II. Furthermore, 5 items were accepted as constraints to the improvisation of instructional media, 6 items were accepted as constraints to the utilization of improvised instructional media, 6 items each from table 4.5 and 4.6 were accepted as strategies that cah enhance the improvisation of instructional media and strategies that can enhance the utilization of instructional media by senior secondary school II government teachers. Based on these findings, it was recommended that compulsory seminars and workshop should be organized by the government and school management from time to time for all teachers as this will expose them to the constraint to improvisation and utilization of instructional media and the skills/ strategies needed for improvisation and utilization of instructional media, using local or cheap media.
