ABSTRACT.
The
Federal Government of Nigeria established River Basin Development Authorities
(RBDAs) with the major responsibility of developing irrigation schemes for
increase in the production of crops and to lease the irrigated land to farmers.
This study examined the impact of Ogoja Irrigation Project on the farmer's productivity
and income in Ogoja L. G. A. of Cross River State. Primary data were obtained
with the aid of a structured questionnaire. Thirty respondents were randomly
selected from two communities (Adagom and Ishibori) using CRBDA irrigation
facilities. Thirty other respondents were also drawn from the same communities
that were not involved in the irrigation schemes Analysis of data involved multiple
techniques descriptive statistics, and budgeting technique. The cost and
returns analysis showed higher profitability for irrigated farms. The farmers
of irrigated farms had higher net farm income (4557594Iha), at a lower cost.
While those that did not engage in irrigation scheme secured net farm income of
73938.65/ha at a higher cost. Also mean income and output of irrigated farm and
non-irrigated farm showed significant difference in output andincome of the two
groups. The multiple regression analysis revealed that farm size under-utilized
while labour and fertilizer were over-utilized for irrigated farms while farm
size was under - utilized whereas Labour, fertilizer and seeds were
over-utilized. The profit of the irrigated farms can enhance through efficient
irrigation system which require provision of water in right qualities; of
appropriate quality and applied at the right time along with adequate timely
provision of improved seeds, fertilizer and other inputs for agricultural
productivity.
