Haematological Values Of Phenyl Hydrazine-Induced Anemia On Rats Treated With The Aqueous Leaf Extract Of Fluted Pumpkin (Telfairia Occidentalism, Green, (Amaranthus), And Garden Egg( Solanum Melongena):- Nwaorgu, Lilian I
ABSTRACT
This study was designed to investigate the
effects ofthe aqueous leaf extract offluted pumpkin, green and Garden Egg leafs
on some hematological parameters and weight; in 2, 4-
dinitrophenylhydrazine-induced anemia in experimental rat. Twenty five Wister
albino rats were acquired and separated into five groups offive rats each for
the study. Rats in Groups 2, 3, 4, and 5 were injected 50 mg/kg 2,
4-dinitrophenylhydrazine; a two - day oral injection interval; for six days, to
induce anemia, while rats in Group 1 were fed with vital finisher, grower’s
mash and water ad libitum. The result of the analysis for Red blood cell (RBC),
platelets (PLT), white blood cell (WBC) and haemoglobin (HB) are as follows:
garden egg leaf(4.13 ± 0.40c, 620.40± 94.65% 47.70 ± 8.71°, 16.20 ± 0.91b);
green leaf (4.52 ± 0.42d, 640.20 ± 27.12a, 40.14 ± 2.42b, 16.96 ± 0.97b);
fluted pumpkin leaf(3.65 ± 0.09b, 869.40 ± 65.65c, 44.06 ± 6.28b, 16.60 ±
0.72b). All analysis was done using the standard methods. The result of this
study shows that, oral administration of 50 mg/kg of aqueous leaf extract of
fluted pumpkin, green, and Garden Egg leafs to the rats in induced treated i.e
groups 3, 4, and 5 increased the hematological parameters under investigation while
the induced control i.e group 2 significantly decreased. The result of this
research indicate that 50 mg/kg aqueous leaf extract of fluted pumpkin, green,
and Garden Egg leaves could elevate the packed cell volume, red blood cells,
hemoglobin concentration, white blood cell, and platelets in the rats induced
with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine. Hence, oral administration of the extracts
could cure hemolytic anemia. The leaf extract also caused an increase in the
weight ofthe anemic rats. It can be concluded that aqueous leaf extract of
fluted pumpkin, green, and garden egg leafs a potential blood booster and has
hepatoprotective property
