ABSTRACT
Phytochemical composition and inhibitory effects of buchholzia
coriaceae on effects of buchholsia Coriceae
as compared to other botanicals (Piper guincese and pepper) on maize weevils
(Silophilus zeamcus) were also studied. The maize grains were stored in nylon
bag, plastic container and sack bag. The shelf stability of' the maize grains
were monitored by evaluating tlìe motility of the maize weevil, moisture
content and weight lose of the grains. The result showed that maize stored with
piper giuneese in sack bag ranked best followed by maize stored with piper
guineese in nylon bag and with maize stored with l3uchholzia coriaceae in
plastic, pepper in nylon bag Buc/thoizia coriaceae in sack bag being ranked
equal . The result revealed the presence of tannins (O.852mg/lOOmg), alkaloids
(0.735mg/bOg). Phytate (0.Ol8mg/lOOg), total phenol (O.ftl3mglbOOg), saponins,
steroids and flavonoids (0.013mg/bOg) in the powder. The inhibitory effects of
liuchholzia coriaceae was evaluated by storing maize in three different
container viz plastic container, nylon bag and sack bag with a temperature of
29°C ±2 and a relative humidity of 65 — 70%.
