ABSTRACT
This experiment was carried out at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike to compare the growth performance of pure west African Dwarf (WAD), Red Sokoto (RS) kids and their crosses in rain forest zone of Nigeria. The experiment was completely randomized design (CRD) with genotypes as the major factor of interest. Four genetic groups consisting of pure Red sokoto (RS x RS) pure West African dwarf (WAD x WAD), main cross (RS x WAD) and reciprocal cross (WAD x RS) progenies were generated from a base population of 1:9 jd sokoto does and 1:10 west African dwarf does. Parameters measured include body weight changes, linear body measurement, average daily gain, (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), cost of production, revenue and gross margin realized from raising each genetic group. Results than RS x RS male is weighed significantly (p<O.05) more (1840± 230.98g) at birth than the RS x WAD (1371.43 ± 56.54g), WAD x RS (1430 ± 144.56g) and WAD x WAD (1150 ± 35.36g). Average daily gain (ADG)was significantly highest for RS x WAD kids (46.03 ± l.41g/d) followed by RS x RS (45.37 ± 1034g/d), and WAD x RS (43.00 ± 3.34g/d) and WAD x WAD (38.63 ± 3.o4gld) FCR was lower and efficient (7.02 ± 0.21) in WAD x WAD. From these results, it also shows that pure RS x RS and WAD x RS could be selected as they showed good performance in both weight and linar body parameters. The pure and cross bred Red Sokoto and West African dwarf growing kids performed better in the rainforest zone under intensive management system.
