Effects Of Waste Water From Fish Pond On Some Selected Engineering Properties Of Soil (Case Study Of Mouau Fish Farm)
ABSTRACT
Field experiment was conducted during
the raining season at the fish farm of Michael Okpara University of
Agriculture. Umudike (MOUAU) on the sandy loam soil to test the effects of
waste water from fish pond on the engineering properties of the soil. The experiment
was carried out with the soil samples collected from the discharge point of the
fish pond and the soil sample collected from a point away from the discharge
point. The samples were tested for the following engineering properties of
soil: bulk density, total porosity, moisture content, particle density.
saturated hydraulic conductivity and Atterherg limits. The average result
gotten from the affected soil are as follows: moisture content (20.93%), bulk
density (1.40g/cm3). particle density (2.68g1cm3). porosity (47.65%). K \T
(3.98 x 10 mis). For no affected soils, moisture content (16.06%), bulk density
(1 .45g/cm3). particle density (2.3 Sa/cm3 ). porosity (39.1 %), KSAT (1.49 x I
6 mis). The study revealed that the fish pond waste water affected soil were
clayed loam while the non affected soil were sandy loam soil. Waste water from
fish pond was found to improve the engineering properties of the soil.
