ABSTRACT
A study of the effect
of soil trampling by animal on some soil engineering properties was carried out
in Umudike. The results of the study showed that the soil textural class for
the normal soil (control) was sandy loam soil, while the partially trampled and
fully trampled soil was clay loam. The average soil moisture contents for the
various levels of trampling were 23.6 percent (%), 25.6 percent (%) and 27.4
percent % for never grazed, partially grazed alid fully grazed soils,
respectively. The study also revealed that the never trampled soil had the
highest porosity while the fully trampled soil had the least porosity. This
implies that the fully trampled soil have tendency for low infiltration rate
and high runoff potential, thus making the soil more vulnerable to erosion. The
compressibility values for never trampled soil is highest while the
compressibility value for fully trampled is the least. This shows that the
fully trampled soils are already compacted more than the others. The shear
strength of the soils are very moderate as the values are quite above 2000kPa which
is regarded as the minimum recommended shear strength for plant growth. The
implication of the results is that animal trampling increases the
susceptibility of soil to erosion.
