ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of waste management practices in Nkisi River, Onitsha north local government area of Anambra state Nigeria for domestic purpose. Eight samples were collected four samples from June and four samples for July from different point labeled Al, A2, A3, A4 taking the appropriate precaution, the samples were transported to the laboratory within 3 hours of separation, water samples analysis were conducted to determine the various parameter in the samples in including the physical, chemical and biological parameter. The results were subjected to statistical analysis and compared with world standard for drinking water, Mean values of the results obtained from the Nkisi River for the two month were; Temperature(°c):26.49,26.O 1,26.01,27.01; Turbidity(NTU):4.0,3 .0,4.0,4.0; Electric Conductivity(s/cm): 1230.50,1200,1109.50,1300; pH:6.45,6.54,6.55,6.5 1; Total Dissolved Solids(mg/1):239.50,22 1.50,241.50,230.50; Dissolved Oxygen(mg/l): 6.49,6.54,6.59,6.59; Biological Oxygen Demand (mg/l):2.2 1,2.20,2.30,2.21; Chemical Oxygen Dernand(mg/l): 186.51,174.40,175.41,180.50; Nitrate (mg/l):0.02,0.02,0.02,0.02; E.coli (mg/l):5.2x 10'; Total Coliform Count (mg/l):2.ox 10'; The results showed that the waste dump had significant effect on the river water quality for domestic use with high values recorded in BOD, COD and biological parameter. The percentage compliance of the mean values for the four different water sample with guideline values (GLV) of WHO and FEPA was performed. None of the samples met the minimum requirements for BOD, COD and TSS, which indicators of pollution. It was concluded that the Nkisi River is not suitable for domestic use and will require treatment before been used or consumed.
