ABSTRACT

The effect of feeding frequency on the survival and cannibalism of Clarias gariepinuus fry were evaluated and determined under the laboratory condition at Michael Okpara University; of Agriculture, Umudike. Breeding activity was carried' out using hormone induoebreeding (ovaprim at 0.5m/kg of fish). After a latency period of 10 hours, the eggs were stripped out, fertilized and incubated. On the fifth day, 5g of feeding was measured which fed them to their satiation for a whole fed them to satiation. The; 0.2g, that was used in feeding each treatment according to its frequency. T1 (using. 6 hours interval), T2 (4 hours interval), and T3 (2hrs interval). In each week, the percentage body weight was decreasing by 10%, while the quantity of feed fed was increasing, likewise the particle size of feed concentrates from 0.2mm.to 0.5mm.c.gariepinus fry are free swimming fish after the absorption of egg york, lastly it was found that feeding frequency among fry of C.gariepinus greatly affects the survival and cannibalism.lt was observed that the best survival rate that were obtained among the treatments set of fry were T2(4hours interval) and T3(2hours interval) which givesl4 and 16 respectively while the least survival rate wasTl(6hours interval) which is 8 .Finally the rapid drop of survival rate between the treatments were as a result of the feeding frequency used, high ami^bnia contents, oxygen reduction, temperature fluctuation and pH variation.Therefore.it would be very much important if,hatchery managers are 1to note all these and putrthem into consideration for rapid increase of fish seed.
