ABSTRACT
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of amending soil with termite mound on the properties of soil and to evaluate the uptake of nutrient by plant grown on the soil. The soil used for this study was collected from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike farm, while the temite mound was collected around the school compound. The soil materials were ground to pass through 2mm sieve and mixed in different proportions to obtain five treatments of 100% OS, 100% TM, 75%OS + 25% TM, 50% OS + 50%TM, 25%OS + 75%TM. Each treatment was replicated five times. The design of the study was completely randomized design (CRD). Ten kilograms of the treatments were put into 10 litre pots and maize seeds were planted on them. Data obtained from measurements and laboratory defeminations were analysed using ANOVA and mean separation done using least Significant Difference (LSD) at 5% probability level. Result obtained showed that soil amendment with termite mound resulted in significantly (P<0.05) higher in crop nutrient (available phosphorus, exchangeable calcium, magnesium and potassium) and soil pH as well as organic matter than the control. From the result of the measurement, maize grown on treatments containing termite mounds also had significantly (P<0.05) higher plant height, stem girth and dry matter yield and nutrient uptake compared with the control.
