ABSTRACT

The study examined the Economics of yam production in Akaeze Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. It considered the Socio- Economic factors affecting yarn production, the economic returns from yarn in the study area and the problems encountered by the yarn farmers. Some policy measures, which will positively influence yam production, were recommended. A total of 110 respondents were randomly selected from three (3) towns in Akaeze Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and interviewed using well-structured questionnaire and oral interview. Analysis was done using simple statistical tools like tables, means, percentages, Net farm- income, regression analysis and efficiency use of resource. Net farm income analysis was used to determine the economic returns of the enterprise, which was found to be profitable at a profit margin of N30,93 1. Multiple regression analysis was adopted to estimate the production function for yarn production enterprise. Results showed that input factors significantly affect output of yams. The resources (inputs) were found to have being efficiently utilized. Constraints in yarn production included inadequate capital, high costs of labour, pest and disease attack, high cost of inputs pilfering, lack of fertilizer, lack of extension services, bad road, lack of asses to land. It was recommended that Government should grant farmers credit facilities through banks and other financial institutions as well as provide extension services to farmers. Farmers should form themselves into co-operatives so as to obtain subsidies. Conclusively, the prospect of yarn production in the study area is profitable. If the recommendations made, in this study are adopted and if policy makers, extension agent, agricultural institutions and yarn farmers carryout their activities with hard work and vision, the economic situation of farmers stands to be more enhanced.
