ABSTRACT

The study examined the Economics of Quail Egg Production in Abia State, Nigeria. Specifically, it examined the socioeconomic factors and management production influence on output from the farmers, cost and returns estimation market structure and channel for quail egg, constraints and prospects associated with quail egg production. Purposive sampling techniques were adopted in sampling (8) respondents. Data were collected using well structured questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained from Journals, internet information. The results showed that the quail egg producers ranged from 21-50years were in their active age with majority been single. The quail producers had high exposure to basic education with farming experience l-6years which signifies that quail egg production is entirely a new business in the study area. The household of the respondents ranges from 1-above 10 which shows they had family members to carter for. The economics of quail egg farmers invested 14129680.45 and realized N17 0000 as total revenue. This shows that quail egg production is profitable with net return of N40319.55.this was computed using Net income approach. From the chart of the market structure and marketing channel of quail egg, there is less demand of quail egg in the study area and the market has not yet been properly created. The major constraints to egg production in the study area were high capital requirement, lack of information, poor market and stock procurement. The major prospects of quail, educating people on nutritional benefit of quail egg, creating quality market and techniques for preserving the eggs. Government, NGO's and • other cooperate bodies creating awareness and educating people on the quail egg production in Abia State and Nigeria at large were recommended.
