ABSTRACT

This study focused on economic analysis of poultry value chain in Umuahia local government area of Abia State. A multi stage sampling technique was used in selecting the respondent used for the study. Structured questionnaire and interview schedules were used in data collection. Simple descriptive statistics, cost and return analysis and ordinary least squares multiple regression model were used to analyze data. Results show that the mean marketing experience was only 2 years, while there were overlaps in the roles played by the different stakeholders in the chain. Netrevenue per kilogram of poultry of the producers per week was 89.54; processors N465.52; cold room operators 13O.O6, and market sellers net revenue per kilogram per week was N177.92. Five of the six independent variables included in the multiple regression model were found to significantly affect the revenue of the respondents. These include the age of the respondents, their gender, household size, educational level, and business experience. They accepted all the challenges listed as impeding their business performance, to include lack of assistance from the government, transportation of birds, unstable power supply. These challenges include lack of adequate storage facilities. It was recommended that poultry stakeholders in the study area should form formal associations so they can have stronger influence to attract incentives to themselves. It was also recommended that alternative sources of power such as solar to be sought by the cold room operators in order to cut down costs incurred on electricity generators.
