ABSTRACT

The study investigated processing of cassava into garri comparing the traditional and modern methods in Ikwuano local government area in Abia State. The study covers six a. villages in Ibere and Oboro Zone that make upon lkwuano Local Government Area. The specific objectives were to determine! analyze the two processing methods in terms of technology, labour and input; compare cost and returns, compare profitability for traditional and modem methods of processing cassava into garri, identify the constrains peculiar to each processing method and make policy and necessary recommendations based on findings. Data were collected using structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed to 60 respondents in the study area. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics. Gross margin analysis was used to determine the cost and returns, and net income analysis was used in profitability of both traditional and modem methods of processing cassava. The analysis showed that the cost and returns in the traditional processing method has an average amount of 1870. 925 vuiIe modern processing method has an average amount of 2850.65. This shows that modern processing method has more return than traditional processing method. In comparing profitability, traditional processing method has average profit of N 1870.675 and modern processing method has an average profit of N 28850.600. This implies that modern processing method is more profitable.
