ABSTRACT
This study investigated the economics
of beef consumption in Ahiazu- Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State. The
following objectives guided the study to determine the socio- economic
characteristics of beef consumers, examine the beef consumption function for
the households, Analyze the own, cross, price and income elasticities of beef
consumption, Examine the problems faced by the beef consumers, and Identifying
other animal protein sources used by the consumers. Multi-stage random sampling
technique was used to select 50 respondents. Data relevant to the research were
collected through the use of structured questionnaires. Pieces of information
were sought on such variables as socio-economic and other variables of interest
that encourages beef consumption function and the quantity of beef consumed
monthly. The data collected were analysed by the use of statistical techniques
such as, frequencies, percentages, test of significance, regression analysis.
The result showed that beef had the highest consumers patronage (76%) of the
respondents. The result also reveals that 74%of beef consumers consume between
0 — 5 kg of beef monthly, 18% consumes 6- 10kg whereas only 2% consumes a
higher quantity of 16kg and above per month. Own price elasticity of demand for
beef indicates that the demand for beef is inelastic. Cross price elasticity is
elastic and income elasticity. The economic implication is that beef is an
essential commodity whose demand is easily affected by fluctuation in price,
and household's income. This is however, in line with the a priori
expectations. In summary, Government should encourage the establishment of
cattle farms in the state, discourage the activities of the middlemen and
ensure a uniform weighing device for beef in the state market.
