ABSTRACT

Vegetable fibres are obtained from various parts of the plants. Fibres are long, thin, and hair like materials which are very small in diameter; they are indispensable to the welfare of man and his environment. This study was aimed. at ascertaining the use of household products from cotton yarn, coconut and. ramnie fibres. The study was conducted using twenty staff and students in 300 and 400 levels in the Department of Home Economics of Federal University of Agriculture, Umudike, using purposive sampling method. A laboratory experiment wa. conducted in processing coconut and ramie fibres into yarn and develop the yarns (Cotton, Coconut, and ramie) into household goods. The data collected were analysed using simple percentages and t-test analysis. Results from the data revealed that the developed products: Table mat with plainweaveL(Product Al), Head rest with plain weave (Product Bi), Foot mat, Floor brash, Hat and Hand bag were highly acceptable for use. Bsedon the f1nd1ngsbf this study, it was recommended that local crafts which aim at developing indigenous technology should be encouraged. This will promote the utilization of our local fibres. It will also help to reduce our reliance on foreign goods.
