ABSTRACT
This
project was sited at the teaching and research farm of Michael Okpara University
of Agriculture, Umudike in South Eastern Nigeria to Investigate and establish
quantitatively the level of heterosis of the first filial generation of three different
genotypes of water melon. (Citrullus vulgaris Schrad.). The experimental design
used was the randomized complete block design (ROB), in three replicates, with
three genotypes of watermelon, namely, Sugar Baby, Congo and Garrison. The
second experiment involved the three parents and their F1 hybrids. All
significant ANOVA results were subjected to mean separation using DMRT
procedure. Heterosis was obtained using better parent value (BPV) and mid
—parent value (MPV). Based on their percentage BPV (or MPV) the F1 hybrid of
Sugar Baby x Garrison its reciprocal is recommended for length of vine and leaf
area while Garrison x Congo is recommended for number of fruits per plant, number
of female flowers at fruit maturity, number of leaves when first male flower
appeared, number of leaves when first female flower appeared and number of
branches per plant, while Sugar Baby X Congo and its reciprocal are recommended
for weight of fruits per plant.
